Riley Colton was a formidable opponent and a great ally. Flynn wasn’t sure where he stood yet with Vikki’s eldest brother.

“You, of all people, know how unpredictable someone like Joseph can be. He’s unhinged at the least, and now we’re going to add ‘homicidal’ to the list. Why did you leave my sister alone?”

“No excuse, sir.” Flynn purposely called him “sir.” Riley was former FBI, the head of a private civilian investigative firm. He didn’t report to him. But Riley was Vikki’s brother. Had been there for her after their parents died, so his investment was even deeper.

“Dang right there’s no excuse. Where the heck were you when Joseph broke into the room?”

“In the hotel lobby bar, buying a bottle of champagne.”

Riley’s scowl turned into a threatening menace, and Flynn, not shaken by a lot, fought to stand his ground. “Champagne. While my sister—”

“Was waiting for me to return, yes. I messed up. I’ll never let her out of my sight again.” Flynn’s heart seemed to stop beating, then begin again, racing to catch his thoughts.

He’d meant what he’d said. Literally. He never wanted another day of his life to be without Vikki. It didn’t make sense, but then, when did anything related to heart matters? His mother still hoped that Landon would come around, see the error of his ways, admit to his part in the RevitaYou development and production.

“Why do you need to be around her at all again?”

“We’re working on finding Captain Joseph and also my half brother, Landon. Both related to RevitaYou, as you know. And, Riley, you have to know that there’s nothing you could say to me about leaving Vikki alone that’s worse than what I’ve already told myself.”

Riley’s countenance shifted from protective older brother to compassionate colleague. “We both care for her, apparently. And I’m the last one to judge whatever’s going on between you two, no matter how quickly it’s transpired. When your life is at stake, it can make a relationship form much more quickly.”

Flynn nodded, not willing to share everything with Riley. The man knew enough, and Flynn and Vikki needed time to talk things out. Heck, he didn’t even know if she felt the same as he did.

“What’s with the bruise on her temple?”

“She told me that Joseph knocked her head into the wall.” He grimaced as he looked back toward the EMTs. One was shining a flashlight in Vikki’s eyes while the other was hooking her up to an IV. A solar blanket enveloped her form. “She had signs of shock and it looks like they’re treating it. I won’t be surprised if she has a concussion.”

“Did she lose consciousness?”

“Not that I know of, but as you’ve already pointed out, I wasn’t there when Joseph assaulted her.”

“She’s not staying here any longer. The storm’s about to break, and she needs to be in a safe spot. So do you.” Riley wasn’t asking; he was telling Flynn what to do.

“I take orders from my military commander.”

“The same guy who just tried to kill all of us, most of all, my sister? Besides, you took leave.
